Zeeland

Zeeland (/ˈziːlənd/; Dutch pronunciation: [ˈzeːlɑnt] ( listen), Zeelandic: Zeêland [ˈzɪə̯lɑnt], historical English exonym Zealand) is the westernmost and least populous province of the Netherlands. The province, located in the south-west of the country, consists of a number of islands and peninsulas (hence its name, meaning "Sealand") and a strip bordering Belgium. Its capital is Middelburg. Its area is about 2,930 square kilometres (1,130 sq mi), of which almost 1,140 square kilometres (440 sq mi) is water, and it has a population of about 380,000.

Large parts of Zeeland are below sea level. The last great flooding of the area was in 1953. Tourism is an important economic activity. In the summer, its beaches make it a popular destination for tourists, especially German tourists. In some areas, the population can be two to four times higher during the high summer season. The coat of arms of Zeeland shows a lion half-emerged from water, and the text luctor et emergo (Latin for "Ik worstel en kom boven" (I struggle and emerge)).[1] The country of New Zealand was named after Zeeland after it was sighted by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman.

Nehalennia is a mythological goddess of an ancient religion known around the province of Zeeland. Her worship dates back at least to the 2nd century BC,[2] and flourished in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.[2] She was possibly a regional god, either Celtic or pre-Germanic – but sources differ on the culture that first worshipped her. During the Roman era, her main function appeared to be the protection of travelers, especially seagoing travelers crossing the North Sea. Most of what is known about her mythology comes from the remains of carved stone offerings (votives) which have been dredged up from the Oosterschelde (Eastern Scheldt) since 1970. Two more Nehalennia offering stones have also been found in Cologne, Germany.[2]

Wishek, North Dakota

Wishek was platted in 1898 when the railroad was extended to that point.[7] A post office has been in operation at Wishek since 1898.[8] The city was named in honor of John H. Wishek, Sr., a local cattleman.[9] Wishek was originally built up chiefly by Germans from Russia.[10]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 1,002 people, 454 households, and 263 families residing in the city. The population density was 695.8 inhabitants per square mile (268.6/km2). There were 516 housing units at an average density of 358.3 per square mile (138.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.3% White, 0.9% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 0.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.1% of the population.

There were 454 households of which 20.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.4% were married couples living together, 3.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 1.8% had a male householder with no wife present, and 42.1% were non-families. 39.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.08 and the average family size was 2.75.

Wolford, North Dakota

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 36 people, 17 households, and 10 families residing in the city. The population density was 225.0 inhabitants per square mile (86.9/km2). There were 27 housing units at an average density of 168.8 per square mile (65.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 100.0% White.

There were 17 households of which 23.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% were married couples living together, and 41.2% were non-families. 41.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was 2.90.

The median age in the city was 51.5 years. 25% of residents were under the age of 18; 0.0% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 19.4% were from 25 to 44; 36.2% were from 45 to 64; and 19.4% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 47.2% male and 52.8% female.

Wyndmere, North Dakota

Wyndmere (/ˈwaɪnmɪər/ WYN-meer) is a city in Richland County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 429 at the 2010 census.[5] Wyndmere was founded in 1883 and named after Windermere in England.[6] It is part of the Wahpeton, ND–MN Micropolitan Statistical Area.

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 429 people, 192 households, and 117 families residing in the city. The population density was 487.5 inhabitants per square mile (188.2/km2). There were 226 housing units at an average density of 256.8 per square mile (99.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.6% White, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 2.6% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.1% of the population.

There were 192 households of which 27.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% were married couples living together, 4.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 39.1% were non-families. 35.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.86.

Surrey, North Dakota

Surrey is a city in Ward County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 934 at the 2010 census.[5] Official incorporation of Surrey occurred in 1951. The city is part of the Minot Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Surrey was founded on June 18, 1900, and named after Surrey, England, by Great Northern Railway officials.[6] It was one of several sites along the Great Northern's transcontinental route between Devils Lake and Minot that were named after places in England (the others were Berwick, Leeds, Norwich, Penn, Rugby, Tunbridge, and York).

In 1910, Surrey gained notoriety as being the point where construction began on a shortening of the Great Northern transcontinental route. This construction progressed eastward and was completed in 1912.[7] The new line, which proceeded diagonally from Fargo to Surrey and reduced the distance required to travel between those two cities by 44 miles (71 km),[8] came to be popularly known as the Surrey Cutoff.[6] Both the cutoff and the original line are still in place today, with the cutoff forming a part of the BNSF Railway's northernmost transcontinental route.

Wahpeton, North Dakota

Wahpeton (/ˈwɑːpɪtən/ WAH-pit-ən) is a city in Richland County, in southeastern North Dakota, United States. It is located along the Bois de Sioux River at its confluence with the Otter Tail River, forming the Red River of the North. Wahpeton is the county seat of Richland County.[5] The U.S. Census Bureau estimated the city's 2015 population was 7,899.

Wahpeton was founded in 1869 and is the principal city of the Wahpeton Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Richland County, North Dakota and Wilkin County, Minnesota. Wahpeton's twin city is Breckenridge, Minnesota, located to the east on the other side of the river. The Bois de Sioux River and the Otter Tail River join at Wahpeton and Breckenridge to form the Red River of the North.

The first European explorer in the area was Jonathan Carver in 1767. He explored and mapped the Northwest at the request of Major Robert Rogers, commander of Fort Michilimackinac. This British fort at Mackinaw City, Michigan, protected the passage between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron of the Great Lakes. In 1763 the British had extended their reach in Canada after defeating the French in the Seven Years' War.

Sykeston, North Dakota

Sykeston was founded in 1883 by Richard Sykes, a prominent landowner and founder of several other cities in the state.[6] The city was the county seat of Wells County from 1884 to 1894, when Fessenden took over that role.[7]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 117 people, 65 households, and 36 families residing in the city. The population density was 307.9 inhabitants per square mile (118.9/km2). There were 85 housing units at an average density of 223.7 per square mile (86.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.3% White, 0.9% Asian, and 0.9% from two or more races.

There were 65 households of which 13.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.5% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 44.6% were non-families. 36.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.80 and the average family size was 2.25.

Walhalla, North Dakota

Walhalla is a city in Pembina County, North Dakota, United States. It sits on the banks of the Pembina River, five miles (8 km) from the border with Manitoba (Canada) and approximately 45 mi (72 km) from the border with Minnesota. The population was 996 at the 2010 census.[6]

Walhalla was established in 1845.[7] Walhalla is the second oldest town in North Dakota, its history bound up in the fur trade of the Red River Valley.[8] One mile northeast of town is the North West Company fur trading post, established in 1797 by David Thompson, and in 1801 moved to a site one mile east of Walhalla, where a reconstructed building is now located.

In town is the Kittson Trading Post, established by Norman Kittson, an American Fur Company agent, in 1843. This is the oldest building in North Dakota. It is located in the Walhalla State Historical Park and is preserved by the State Historical Society.[10]

Tappen, North Dakota

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 197 people, 89 households, and 52 families residing in the city. The population density was 187.6 inhabitants per square mile (72.4/km2). There were 106 housing units at an average density of 101.0 per square mile (39.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.0% White, 0.5% African American, 1.5% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.5% of the population.

There were 89 households of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.7% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 10.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.6% were non-families. 34.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.81.

The median age in the city was 40.3 years. 23.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 9.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.4% were from 25 to 44; 27.4% were from 45 to 64; and 14.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 52.8% male and 47.2% female.
